My research focused on understanding how skeletal and muscular systems evolve in parasitoid wasps and how host ecology drives repeated patterns of morphological convergence. During my Ph.D., I integrated comparative morphology, micro-CT scanning, phylogenetic analyses, and evolutionary modeling to investigate the ovipositor system, mouthparts, and metasomal structures in Ichneumonidae. This work provided new insights into the functional and evolutionary mechanisms underlying host shifts and the repeated emergence of parasitoid syndromes. This dissertation represents years of collaboration, fieldwork, anatomical study, databasing efforts, and community building within ichneumonid systematics. It lays the foundation for a modern, integrative framework to study phenotype evolution in one of the most diverse lineages of Hymenoptera.",[23],"Milestone",[25,26,27],"Milestones","Ph.D.","Doctorate",[29
https://stars.library.ucf.edu/etd2024/283/","Check out my Ph.D. Thesis","/news/2025/2025_06_24_phd
news/2025/2025_06_24_PhD","FWbvREhBZqOvXEciSXQ4qJceZM0RKJBbeB7PcsaKO9Q
"news/news/2025/2025_08_21_PostDoc.md","Postdoctoral Scholar
[
[],"I began my postdoctoral at the University of Central Florida
2025-08-15",[47],"Job","/news/2025/2025_08_21_postdoc
news/2025/2025_08_21_PostDoc","sgxiS-dCVYpfpM6U-UMwwMkFKOaOYIB0nG_QTFo1m-4
"news/news/2025/BDJ_Publication.md","Discovering the Darwin Wasps in Sicily
[
[],"New publication in Biodiversity Data Journal!
"2025-12-18","We explored the Nature Reserve of Pantalica and uncovered a surprising diversity of Darwin wasps.","We documented 81 species, of which 42 are new for Sicily and 9 new for Italy. In a five-day meeting in Basel (Switzerland) in June 2019, 22 researchers from 14 countries met to discuss the most important issues in ichneumonid research, including increasing the speed of species discovery, resolving higher-level relationships, and studying the radiation of these parasitoids onto various host groups through time. All agreed that it is time to advertise ichneumonid research more broadly and thereby attract young talents to this group for which specialists are sorely lacking, as well as increase public awareness about their exciting biology and ecological impact. In order to popularize the group, we here suggest a new vernacular name for the family, “Darwin wasps”, to reflect the pivotal role they played in convincing Charles Darwin that not all of creation could have been created by a benevolent god. We hope that the name catches on, and that Darwin wasps start buzzing more loudly across all disciplines of biology.","/publications/2019/klopfstein_etal_2019
publications/2019/Klopfstein_etal_2019","CYo4EP1rOIrA45Yl8cXjejH8HEBN5EFA5cqmEPPC5e4
"publications/publications/2019/Ridel_DalPos_2019.md","Contribution to the Afrotropical Ichneumoninae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) from Gabon and Sierra Leone, with description of five new species and two new subspecies
[
[
"2019-07-26","Linzer biologische Beitrage","51"," 1","419-436","/PDFs/2019/Riedel&DalPos_2019.pdf",[418,422
"Matthias","Riedel","https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5747-1223
[72,287,187],"In the present study, we describe and illustrate several new taxa of the subfamily Ichneumoninae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) from Gabon (Central Africa) and one species from Sierra Leone (West Africa).","/publications/2019/ridel_dalpos_2019
publications/2019/Ridel_DalPos_2019","sSr8mU64PI3kPGkvPtCaUWbADZgUuChqOZUFVY6yopM
"publications/publications/2022/DalPos_etal_2022.md","The Giordani Soika collection of Eumeninae at the Natural History Museum of Venice Giancarlo Ligabue: catalogue of species and type specimens (Insecta, Hymenoptera, Vespidae)
[
[
"2022-05-13","Zootaxa","5137","1-111","https://doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.5137.1","https://www.researchgate.net/publication/360576026_The_Giordani_Soika_collection_of_Eumeninae_at_the_Natural_History_Museum_of_Venice_Giancarlo_Ligabue_catalogue_of_species_and_type_specimens_Insecta_Hymenoptera_Vespidae",[444,446,451
"Department of Biology, University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida, United States of America
"James M.","Carpenter","Division of Invertebrate Zoology, American Museum of Natural History, New York, NY, 10024, USA","https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6754-8028
"Marco","Uliana","Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia Giancarlo Ligabue, S. Considering the estimates of up to 15 million extant eukaryotic species on Earth, of which only about 2 million have been described so far, there has been a recent boom of new potential approaches to more quickly discover and describe the millions of unknown species. This deficit is particularly noted in hyperdiverse taxa, as the current rate of species discovery is considered too slow. Recently, a minimalist alpha taxonomic approach was proposed, relying solely on DNA barcoding and a habitus photograph, in a claimed effort to expedite the naming of new species to combat the so-called taxonomic impediment. In this paper, we point to limitations of minimalist taxonomy, present arguments in favour of the integrative approach, and finally explore a number of potential solutions to combat the taxonomic impediment in hyperdiverse taxa without sacrificing utility and quality for apparent speed and quantity.","/publications/2022/zamani_etal_2022
publications/2022/Zamani_etal_2022","KW0WwZiKD1wf_V6rgFXZM6wPSP1mDAl_XtNmLGlApYo
"publications/publications/2022/Zamani_etal_DNAbarcodes_2022.md","DNA barcodes on their own are not enough to describe a species
[
[
"2022-01-22","Systematic Entomology","https://doi.org/10.1111/syen.12538","/PDFs/2022/Zamani_etal_2022.pdf",[562,564,566,568,572,574,576,577
"Zoological Museum, Biodiversity Unit, University of Turku, Turku, Finland
"Department of Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, Institute of Entomology, Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, České Budějovice, Czech Republic
"Department of Biology, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium; Royal Museum for Central Africa, Section Vertebrates, Tervuren, Belgium
"Tapani","Hopkins","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2256-0098
"Department of Entomology and Nematology, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA; Center for Water Resources, Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Florida, USA
"Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark
"Department of Biology, University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida, USA",[396,187,457],"In this article, we continue this discussion by responding to Sharkey, Brown, et al. Different terminologies for the same traits can generate bias in phylogeny and prevent correct homology assessments. This situation is exacerbated in the male genitalia of Hymenoptera, and specifically in Ichneumonoidea, in which the terminology is not standardized and has not been fully aligned with the rest of Hymenoptera. In the current contribution, we review the terms used to describe the skeletal features of the male genitalia in Hymenoptera, and provide a list of authors associated with previously used terminology. We propose a unified terminology for the male genitalia that can be utilized across the order and a list of recommended terms. Further, we review and discuss the genital musculature for the superfamily Ichneumonoidea based on previous literature and novel observations and align the terms used for muscles across the literature.","/publications/2023/dalpos_etal_genitalia_2023
publications/2023/DalPos_etal_genitalia_2023","UR1HpGv6nRZqeibqo1bb2KW8wLxlS8Xulwavzfn0nMw
"publications/publications/2024/Claridge_DalPos_2024.md","Revision of Nearctic Eparces (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Ichneumoninae): description Eparces australis Claridge & Dal Pos sp. nov., nomenclatural notes, and new records of Eparces quadriceps (Cresson, 1867)
[
[
"2024-05-22","5453","4","549-557","https://doi.org/10.11646/zootaxa.5453.4.5","https://www.researchgate.net/publication/380784005_Revision_of_Nearctic_Eparces_Hymenoptera_Ichneumonidae_Ichneumoninae_description_Eparces_australis_Claridge_Dal_Pos_sp_nov_nomenclatural_notes_and_new_records_of_Eparces_quadriceps_Cresson_1867",[675,677
"Utah State University, Department of Biology Utah State University 5305 Old Main Hill, Logan, UT, 84322, USA
[72,287,187],"The Nearctic species of the parasitoid wasp genus Eparces are revised. Convergent phenotypes can be combinations of traits that evolve concertedly, called syndromes, and these can be shaped by a common environmental pressure. Parasitoid wasps which use a wide variety of arthropod hosts have also repeatedly and convergently switched host use across their evolutionary history. They thus represent a natural laboratory for the evolution of trait syndromes that are associated with parasitism of specific hosts and host substrates. In this study, we tested the evolution of co-evolving characters in the highly diverse family Ichneumonidae associated with ovipositing in a specific and well-defined substrate: wood. Using a newly constructed phylogeny and an existing morphological dataset, we identified six traits correlated with the wood-boring lifestyle that demonstrate convergent evolution. At least one trait, the presence of teeth on the ovipositor, typically preceded the evolution of other traits and possibly the switch to parasitism of wood-boring hosts. For each trait, we provide a historical review of their associations with wood-boring parasitoids, reevaluate the function of some characters, and suggest future coding improvements. Overall, we demonstrate the convergent evolution of multiple traits associated with parasitism of woodboring hosts and propose a syndrome in a hyper diverse lineage of parasitoid wasps.","/publications/2024/dalpos_sharanowski_2024
publications/2024/DalPos_Sharanowski_2024","APvulmIwsmT_Ht8AqGQqCQ1uA0qZKNlI_jQLlj-P4Xg
"publications/publications/2024/DalPos_etal_Masona_2024.md","Small jewels: two new species of the rare genus Masona van Achterberg (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonoidea, Braconidae), with a catalogue of world species and comments on the peculiar morphology of the genus
[
[
"2024-03-11","925","135-160","https://doi.org/10.5852/ejt.2024.925.2457","/PDFs/2024/Dal Pos_etal_Masona_2024.pdf",[724,725,727
"The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, United Kingdom
"Abigail P.","Martens","Department of Agronomy, Horticulture, and Plant Science, South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD 57007, USA'","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5331-6979",[257,733,187],"Masoninae","A comprehensive review of the enigmatic genus Masona van Achterberg is provided. Estimating species richness helps spotlight taxonomic groups that are particularly under-studied, such as the highly diverse Darwin wasps. The only available estimate of the number of Darwin wasps in the Afrotropics proposed almost 11,000 species, compared to the 2,322 recorded species. However, it relied exclusively on the ratio of morphospecies to described species in Henry Townes’ personal collection. We provide an updated estimate of the Afrotropical Darwin wasp species, using empirical data from multiple sources, including the increase in species numbers following generic revisions, morphospecies sorting in natural history collections, and diversity patterns of better-studied insects (butterflies) for extrapolation. Our analyses suggest that our knowledge of Darwin wasps is highly incomplete, with only 13–22% of species known in the five most extensively studied countries in the Afrotropics. We estimate 9,206–15,577 species of Darwin wasps within the entire Afrotropics, with the highest concentration expected in the Equatorial Afrotropics and Madagascar. Due to data constraints, our approach tends to underestimate diversity at each step, rendering the upper estimate (15,577 species) more realistic. We highlight reasons contributing to the gap between recorded and estimated species richness, including logistical and financial factors, as well as post-colonial influences.","/publications/2024/meier_etal_2024
publications/2024/Meier_etal_2024","ZVHVfKPnegUN1YtXF3n7xB8QTinXDVM29vJM2e-o5tU
"publications/publications/2024/Yang_etal_2024.md","A new record of Coelichneumon rufofemoratus (Cameron, 1903) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) from Eastern Himalayas, with a checklist of all the species of the genus from the Oriental region
[
[
"2024-05-30","Journal of Insect Biodiversity","50","2","32-50","https://doi.org/10.12976/jib/2024.50.2.1","https://www.researchgate.net/publication/380973470_A_new_record_of_Coelichneumon_rufofemoratus_Cameron_1903_Hymenoptera_Ichneumonidae_from_Eastern_Himalayas_with_a_checklist_of_all_the_species_of_the_genus_from_the_Oriental_region?_sg%5B0%5D=vAFaGNeL72eERCpLIsDoLO7OFT-2OhIwdTHsOAK5sdf2d6WNe9UiDTEBbIqy4RPMkiID_yLnzlTsL2tfuhGoa9PALYtSmEnd_IRC0TPq._fI_RzBMs0fbuMrACo304GhOjYpj2HK-uQvqhvVr_DQhqy4zvy-owxu2ZRxW5oKGnKRbl9gTzd0PaNruDeuQwg&_tp=eyJjb250ZXh0Ijp7ImZpcnN0UGFnZSI6ImhvbWUiLCJwYWdlIjoicHJvZmlsZSIsInBvc2l0aW9uIjoicGFnZUNvbnRlbnQifX0",[838,843,848,849,854
"Xia","Yang","Faculty of Biodiversity Conservation, Key Laboratory of Extremely Small Populations of Wildlife in Yunnan, Southwest Forestry University, Kunming 650224, P. This comprehensive checklist not only consolidates existing data but also serves as a crucial resource for future taxonomic research, conservation efforts, and effective management of the diverse Darwin wasps in Chile. A comprehensive understanding of the distribution, abundance, and endemism of Ichneumonidae is essential for accurately assessing the ecological dynamics of the country and implementing targeted conservation strategies.","/publications/2025/araujo_etal_2025
publications/2025/Araujo_etal_2025","PhlUdAJgIAsjtkGX4WBmTWDL-blbYJaf04uw0EAHQmU
"publications/publications/2025/DiGiovanni_etal-BDJ_2025.md","Darwin wasps (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) of the Nature Reserve of Pantalica (Sicily, Italy)
[
[
"Biodiversity Data Journal","e175760","10.3897/BDJ.13.e175760","/PDFs/2025/DiGiovanni_et al_BDJ_2025.pdf",[921,923,926,928,932,936,938,943,948
"University of Siena, Siena, Italy, University of Siena, Siena, Italy
"Badano","https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9715-3107
"University of Central Florida, Orlando, United States of America, University of Central Florida, Orlando, United States of America
"Claudio","Cucini","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1918-0702
"Rebecca","Funari","https://orcid.org/0009-0005-2648-0297
"Zoologische Staatssammlung München, Munich, Germany
"Oleksandr","Varga","I.I.
